Twenty-one institutions have tonight been announced as recipients of The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education in the eleventh biennial round of the scheme.  The announcement was made at an event held by kind permission of The Queen at St James’s Palace on 19 November 2015  by the Royal Anniversary Trust.

Jo Johnson, Minister for Universities and Science said: “The UK is a world leader in science and research and The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes celebrate the achievements of our universities and colleges.  The outstanding work recognised with these awards brings benefits to the everyday lives of millions of people in the UK and beyond.”

The Prizes are awarded in The Queen’s name every two years for work submitted for review by universities and colleges and which demonstrates excellence, innovation and impact, for the institution itself and for people and society more generally in the wider world.  Entries may be in any field or discipline.  A rigorous independent assessment process is administered by the Trust, involving individual review by assessors drawn from a wide range of professions and expertise.  At the conclusion of the process Entries meeting the exacting standards sought by the Prizes are recommended to The Queen for approval on the advice of the Prime Minister.  The 2014-2016 round of the Prizes is the eleventh since the Prizes were first awarded in 1994.  To date a total of 211 Prizes have been awarded, as part of the honours system, to 111 different institutions comprising 71 universities and 40 colleges of further education.  The Prizes were instituted an outcome of the Trust’s initiative to mark the 40th anniversary of her Majesty’s accession and those awarded in the eleventh round, listed below, are expected to be presented at a ceremony at Buckingham palace in February 2016.
